A happy little accident brought me to Conor McBride’s stories. I was searching Amazon for the latest books in Jean Grainger’s Conor O’Shea series when a boxed set of the Conor McBride series (M coming before O in the alphabet) popped up first. Not realizing my mistake, I clicked on the link and was introduced to this other Conor! The luck of the Irish, you might say.

While Conor O’Shea is a delightful character in his own right, Kathryn Guare’s Conor McBride takes the reader on a heart stopping ride through the life of a reluctant undercover agent for M16. Here you meet colorful characters from all over the world as the young hero searches for the brother he believes has betrayed him, putting his own life in danger again and again, and turning him into a person that he’s less than comfortable being. Spies and subterfuge, heroes and villains abound...and it’s never easy to determine which is which.

If you have a drop of Irish blood and love a good story filled with surprising twists and turns, the Conor McBride series is a must read!

Books 1-3 were very good. Great story line, lots of twists and turns. Does occasionally drag but then gets going again. Would read the next in the series. Highly r!

I'm too much of a bibliophile to give 5 stars to anything contemporary. The mark of truly exceptional literature is it's timeless appeal, IMHO. That said, I just finished the first two books in this trilogy and find myself enormously impressed by three very crucial characteristics in these works:
1. The locations, cultures, languages, and other atmospheric elements have been assiduously researched. Knowing nothing of the author's personal life, I cannot nor wish to assert whether the knowledge was gained through first hand experience or academic study. It doesn't matter, because
2. The narrative tone is intelligent and imaginative. Some turns of phrase or imagery are unmistakably poetic, without becoming trite or overwrought. Descriptions enrich the landscape of the tale, without rendering them garish or fussy. The author has used her knowledge of place, time, and tone to bring to life moments of real impact.
3. Each character comes to life in a way that betrays a deep sense of commitment on the author's part. It is all too easy to let a character "take over", and a story then becomes dominated by a single identity, just as it can be tempting for a writer to almost lazily imprison their characters within the limited confines of the author's singular voice. To walk the narrow path between the two is to give the reader a rare perspective and a most rewarding view of a unique environment: a fully realized storyworld.
I look forward to reading further works by Ms. Guare!

I enjoyed the first book, got this set of three about Conor, and also, from the author's web page, got the prequel, as it were, about his parents' meeting.
The first book had Conor, an Irish farmer and violinist, becoming a sort of super spy to save his brother.
The second one had him in America, meeting a woman and then called back into spy business, almost against his will, saving the woman he now knew he loved. She had some secrets that not only tied into his past, but also were a source of danger to her. She was a painter facing the painters' version of writers block, while running a small farm/guesthouse.
The third one had him off to Prague for a concert where he was to be the violin soloist, but again there was some skulduggery afoot and he was to help out. His woman insisted on joining him, got sent to spy school 101, where her artistic mind helped make her a good get-away driver.

book one immediately resonated of an author that could create mystery without the exaggeration that normally accompanies a story with geographical locations that to many readers is unknown . interest of the reader is peeked immediately and it becomes the curious adventure in the diverse geographical locations expertly described within this excellent book.
Readers will anticipate that their interest cannot continue on every page or chapter, however it does not diminish the interest to complete the additional books which although related in certain instances veer towards exploitation of sexual encounters in my opinion detracting from what could have been or should have been satisfaction for this reader to the last page I never anticipated the book would become a disappointment in this area which is alien to my personal choice. Would i read it again ? Yes without a doubt.

I read the first book for free, and immediately bought the boxed set, and am so glad that I did! I love Guare's writing style: her skilful use of language in both character development and description, and the combination of time spent getting to know the characters with twisty and fast-paced plots. I love that there are no descriptions of gratuitous violence or steamy sex, even though it is clear that they exist as part of the plot. That, for me, is a triumph of subtle story telling. I also appreciate the balance Guare maintains, making us aware of the distress and difficult emotions of the heroes at various stages, without becoming bogged down in misery and introspection. Overall, these books are entertaining, satisfying and a great read. Highly recommended. I will definitely reread them.

I've managed to make it through 23 chapters of this trilogy but have decided to pack it in adventure the book set to my library. Although there were interesting segments the beginning of the book when Connor was taking care of some of the initial miscreants, the pursuit of his brother, Thomas, in India seemed to bog down. It became, to me, long on details, and short on substance and action.

The author knows how to spin a story that keeps your interest. You really develop feelings for Kate and Conor. Plenty of action, spy craft, intrigue, some delightful twists. The books seamlessly flow in an unforced way.

A tight editing would have pruned 20% of the verbiage.

An excellent trilogy of books. A little sugary at the close of the 3rd book but the twists and spills leading up got the final scenes were excellent.
All 3 volumes are packed with adventure and the writing style leads you through with baited breath. The true to life unravelling of the plans from the first step to the last is heightened by the deepening plot twists that take you in completely unexpected directions.
