Resolving the Anxiety Dilemma Kindle Edition

NOW THERE IS A WAY TO RESOLVE ANXIETY PROBLEMS

Worry. Panic attacks. Unpleasant anxious feelings. In the past, these and other problems were very hard to treat. People would spend years in therapy with minimal improvement.

With the development of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), things have finally changed. CBT is an evidence-based treatment that strategically targets anxiety symptoms. Studies show that this approach is highly effective, rapidly improving anxious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

This is the goal of Resolving the Anxiety Dilemma — to help readers understand the nature of anxiety problems and resolve them with the powerful tools of cognitive-behavioral therapy.  Using the latest research, Dr. Kollman reveals the surprising factor that drives anxiety issues. He also shows how changing our response to anxiety leads to a great reward: a freer and less anxious life within a wider world.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who experiences anxiety or who simply wants to learn more about how our brains work. The book is accessible to non-experts and written in engaging and lively prose. On my reading, there are two aspects of the book that stand out the most. First, Kollman explains that the behaviors/mental processes (e.g., double checking, worrying) that we undertake to help alleviate anxiety actually end up keeping that anxiety going in the long run (hence, the dilemma). If we truly want to dull anxiety's impact on our lives, we have to have courage to try and not engage in those behaviors/mental processes and be willing to endure a little anxiety in the short run. I read the book about six months ago and can say that this advice has been incredibly helpful. Second, Kollman points out that because evolutionarily we are designed to look for threats in our environment, we (some of us more than others) scan for things/situations to be anxious about. Thus, he explains that (in many cases) it is not the thing/situation per se that is actually cause for our anxiety, even though we think that it is. The thing/situation just happens to be the current focus for our feelings of anxiety that we expect to experience. This understanding can be incredibly powerful and freeing.

"Anxiety is not dangerous because we are built to bear it."

That simple but profound statement from the author sums up the liberating message of this book. It is an amazing book and is going to help a lot of people. It has already helped me. I would highly recommend buying the ebook as well as the hardback. Then you can highlight some of the major concepts in the book and use them as positive affirmations when anxiety strikes.

Here are some of the strengths of the book:

It presents a new research based approach to dealing with anxiety. While it is clearly based upon research and experience, it is not written like a textbook, nor is it written too simply. I especially like the way it explains something in understandable phrases, then use a visual, then reinforce with an acronym. This really helps bring home the points.

The author makes it clear that the techniques work best with a trained counselor but I would love to see more examples about how to live and thrive with anxiety.

Bottom line is this book will not only give you new insights into anxiety but give you hope that you can thrive even with anxiety in your life.

Anxiety is apparently necessary for survival when we face threats, but it can also be overwhelming as a daily experience. Dr. Kollman has extensive knowledge about anxiety - its realities and cures. He also teaches you to go through anxiety instead of resisting it, which is easier said than done. What this book taught me is that I have coping mechanisms to deal with my anxiety. We all probably do.

So if 50% of Americans claim they are experiencing anxiety - what is the real problem? I think we are exposed to fear-based news a lot and by making my home page Google I avoid any unnecessary news I don't want to read. This has helped greatly. Some gurus recommend a news fast to get rid of anxiety. I think it helps. This book does not however discuss the main cause of anxiety as related to news.

Dr. Kollman claims that anxiety is just part of the human condition so we have to get used to it. While anxiety medication might be a good idea it is sometimes addictive and psychiatrists are sometimes reluctant to prescribe it. I looked into GABA finally and have found some relief. Talk to your doctor about any supplements you are taking however.

What this book does is explain the difference between fear, depression and anxiety. It makes logical sense even if symptoms may all occur at once. Dr. Kollman believes that the most effective treatments are forms of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). He believes you should find a therapist and go through some sort of exposure therapy to face your anxiety head on. While this sounds great you may still want to wipe down shopping cart handles as they are the most germ ridden places on earth. Look around you and listen...coughing is happening everywhere you go because people don't pay attention to what they cough on, touch and transfer to others. It is easy to get sick and tough to get well. A little conscious effort will keep you from getting sick as often. It is not bad to be a little anxious about your health. Anxiety about everything else can however be solved according to this author.

If you don't believe in evolution you can ignore a few paragraphs in this book.

Besides that I'd say this book is good and the best book on understanding anxiety I've ever read. For comic relief however you may want to watch "What About Bob." Baby steps you know...

Comprehensive and easy to read book about anxiety. Kollman explains how modern society is allowing anxiety to control life. Anxiety has been a part of human development for eons. In fact, it helped keep prehistoric man on his toes and played a role in survival of the fleetest. Those that were perceptive to danger and reacted quickly lived to procreate, handing down this handy-dandy trait. However, today, anxiety is crippling many people and preventing them from enjoying life. Rather than confront and push through what frightens them, they are avoiding it. This convenience is making it worse. Kollman explains this all in great detail and then gives the reader the tools to "push through it."
The book demystifies anxiety and explains that it fuels itself. He gives the reader exercises so they can understand anxiety will not harm a person. It will not kill us or cause a heart attack. Anxiety is exacerbated by avoidance and sometimes the only solution is to embrace it and conquer those fears holding a person captive.
